Union of Black Episcopalians

John Dublin Epps (Diocese of Texas Chapter)
The diocesan chapter, originally organized in l986, is once again a functioning organization, which promotes the national mission of UBE. We also find that our mission is one of collaboration with other minority branches of the Church.  The chapter meets monthly on the forth Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in various locations throughout the diocese at the six predominately Black churches. Membership dues are $30 for adults and $10 for youth (up to age 18). Please contact Carole Pinkett for more information.

History
Beginning with the establishment of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, Philadelphia by Absalom Jones in 1792, through the election and appointment of more than 37 Black bishops, there has always been a strong corps of Black leaders in the Episcopal Church.  People like James Holly, Henry Delaney, Alexander Crummel, John Dublin Epps and John Wells, to name a few.  Organized in 1968, the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) is the proud inheritor of the work of these people’s vision.

Our Mission
The UBE fights racism by encouraging the involvement of Black people in the total life of the Church – on every level and in every way: stewardship, evangelism, education, leadership, governance and politics.  The UBE is committed to translating these words and ministry into Christian action for ALL Episcopalians
