Safeguarding God's Children (SGC)

Safeguarding God’s Children is a training program for the prevention of sexual abuse of children and youth. The training informs participants of the ways predators gain access to and groom children for abuse and it outlines the safeguards the Church has put in place to protect children and youth in our churches, schools and diocesan institutions.

The Diocese of Texas requires this training for all employees (full or part-time) of churches, schools and Diocesan institutions and for all volunteers who work with children and youth in any ministry setting. The three hour trainings are scheduled in churches, schools and Diocesan institutions as needed to be in compliance with the SGC policy standard that requires training within thirty days of beginning employment or ministry with children and youth.

Safeguarding God's People (SGP)

Safeguarding God's People is actually two training programs for adults: (1) the prevention of sexual exploitation and (2) prevention of sexual harassment in our communities of faith. The trainings intend to raise the awareness of participants to recognize the overt and subtle, the intentional and unintentional ways in which exploitation and harassment occur in various ministries in our churches, schools and institutional work places.

  • Preventing Sexual Exploitation - This is a three hour training held in congregations for persons in designated ministries. (See SGP Policy pages 18-19 for a list of these). It is anticipated that each congregation (or 2 partnered congregations) will have their own trainer(s) to provide the trainings in their location.

  • Preventing Sexual Harassment - This two hour training is primarily for supervisors of employees in our churches, schools and Diocesan institutions. Participants will learn the legal definition of sexual harassment, the specific circumstances and situations which constitute harassment and ways to prevent it. If the church, school or institution chooses, employees may attend first 45 minutes of this training where sexual harassment is defined and reporting procedures described. The balance of the training is for supervisors and focuses on prevention and response. At this time, churches, schools or institutions may request this training for your employees by contacting the Safe Church Office at 512.478.0580.
