With heavy hearts, Hope, Houston, says goodbye to one of their beloved members, David McBride Sr. McBride was one of Houston’s oldest residents, passing away at the age of 103 on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
He was born in Cooks Point, Burleson, County Texas. He was the ninth child birthed to Joseph and Ida Toines-McBride. McBride experienced the loss of his father due to illness when he was only six years old.
McBride was among the founding members of Incarnation Episcopal Church which merged with St. Michaels Episcopal Church to form Hope Episcopal Church. He was also well-known throughout the Acres Homes community in North Houston. Neighbors there remember him as the man that “sold the fresh greens.” His hobby was gardening and planted several crops on his property.
According to an article written by radio station, Majic 102.1 in 2021, Acre Homes residents would line up along the street in front of his property to buy greens, turnips, okra, tomatoes and other vegetables.
McBride took pride in building his own home with his bare hands. “This house was designed and built by me. Every brick laid in this house was laid by me, David McBride! I never had a mortgage. When I first came to Houston, I bought this lot and it took me two years to build it. I didn’t have any help,” said McBride in a previous interview.
McBride met the love of his life in the fall of 1938 at a baseball game. They married in July of 1940. He was 22 years old and his wife, Lucille, was 17. Together, they had 12 children, all who came to be professionals or members of the U.S. Military.
On August 11, 2010, his wife Lucille of 70 years, passed away.
McBride was honored by a City of Houston Proclamation on his 100th on his 101st birthdays (as seen on Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner Twitter account.)
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 5 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Hope Episcopal Church, 1613 West 43rd Street, Houston, TX 77018. A committal service will occur Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Paradise Cemetery North, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088.
He will be remembered and greatly missed.
