Indoor Carnival Brings Children-Incarcerated Parents Together in Unique Summer Camp

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office hosted 57 children to a unique summer camp at the correctional facility in Del Valley just outside of Austin with their incarcerated parents.  The “camp” was set up like an indoor carnival with games, snacks and a reading area. Children spent time each day for five days with their fathers, playing and reading together. Some of the fathers were able to hold their newborn babies for the first time.

The Restorative Justice Ministries Council donated books for the reading area. “It was a very successful event,” said Ed Davis, PhD, coordinator of the diocesan Restorative Justice Ministry. Jennifer Scott, social services program coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office thanked the Diocese of Texas for its participation in planning and holding the event. There are plans to continue the program next summer.
