The Rev. Preston Yancey Accepts Call of Interim Campus Missioner for Northwest Canterbury

The Rev. Preston Yancey has accepted the Bishop of Texas, the Rt. Rev. C. Andy Doyle’s invitation to become interim campus missioner for Northwest Canterbury, the Diocese of Texas announced April 22 , 2022.

He will be supporting Baylor, Texas State Technical College, McLennan Community College, and Central Texas College. Yancey was most recently associate rector of Holy Spirit in Waco.

“I am excited about the appointment of Preston Yancey as the campus missioner,” Bishop Doyle said. “I believe he will bring energy and joy to the work of ministry on our college campuses in the northwest part of our diocesan mission field.”

The Rev. Joann Saylors, canon for mission amplification for the Diocese of Texas, relates the same enthusiasm. “It is exciting to have a Baylor alumnus return to serve Baylor and the other campuses of the Northwest Canterbury group. Preston brings a passion for ongoing learning and discipleship that will be a gift to students, faculty, and staff of the various colleges and to their surrounding communities.”

Yancey’s role will allow him to continue to collaborate with the Episcopal churches in Waco and foster relationships he has already developed as a curate there.

“In the little time I have shared with the students of the Episcopal Student Center, I have been amazed and encouraged by their passion for the Gospel and for intimate friendship with Jesus. These students represent the best of us. They actively seek out the good work that God has prepared for them to walk in, and it is a privilege to champion their witness and explore where the wild workings of the Spirit shall lead them,” shared Yancey.

As interim campus missioner, Yancey looks forward to the vision and planning work he and the students will create to deepen their relationship with Jesus, with God’s justice and abundance, and with a community-focused mindset.

Yancey’s interests include textual criticism and Midrashic interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, viewing The Real Housewives franchises as texts in pastoral theology, and constantly wondering what it means that “the Kingdom of God has drawn near.” His wife, Hilary Yancey, Ph.D., is a bookseller for Fabled in downtown Waco. They have three children: Jackson, Junia, and Joanna and a dog named Sonja.
