Following consultation with the Rt. Rev. Todd Ousley, Bishop for the Office of Pastoral Development of The Episcopal Church, the Standing Committee has designed an open process for a wide-ranging search. As you look at the Timeline below, you will notice that there are no nominations from a third party. Instead, we are accepting applications. We are searching for a leader who feels called to the position, and who will enter a period of discernment with us enthusiastically and hopefully. If you are a potential applicant and would like to discuss the process before you apply, feel free to contact the search committee at .

We also believe that those who might have wanted to nominate someone else still have an important role in this process. We are seeking applicants from around the church in order to provide an inspiring, diverse and enthusiastic list of final candidates for the election.

Bishop Suffragan, West Region

The Bishop Suffragan of the West Region will live in Austin, Texas, at the bishop’s residence on Windsor Road.

The Bishop Suffragan of the West Region will have pastoral oversight for congregations in Austin, Central, Southwest and Northwest Convocations.

The Bishop Suffragan will office at the Diocesan Office at the Seminary of the Southwest and will be responsible for the oversight of those who work in the office. 

The Bishop Suffragan will be the Executive for Ministry. This means that the bishop will oversee the process of Title III, guiding individuals from aspirant, postulancy and candidacy to ordination.  This work will include the appointment of the Chair and the members of the Commission on Ministry. The Bishop Diocesan will oversee ordinations and the process of placement.

The Bishop Suffragan will also serve as Chair of the following institutions: The Seminary of the Southwest, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School and El Buen Samaritano. 

The Bishop Suffragan will join the executive team of the Diocese of Texas and help lead the staff in the accomplishment of the goals set out by the diocese. The staff uses the "traction process" as our operating system and we expect the new bishop to adopt this protocol into their own ministry and become fluent in its use. Our core focus as a team is a purposeful ministry that embodies the mission of reconciliation through evangelism and service. We believe that we are a particular kind of diocese: unified, diverse, and growing. 

The staff of the Diocese of Texas is characterized as a team that has the following values: professionalism, joy, bridge-building, humility, integrity, creativity and a Holy ambition. The Bishop Suffragan will need to exhibit these values in their own ministry. We believe and live into a partnership with a lavish God, following the call of Christ.  It is our hope that the Bishop Suffragan will join this team with excitement and bring his/her particular and unique gifts to the service of this collective and collaborative work.

The salary for the Bishop Suffragan of the West Region is provided for in the Budget and will be the same as the other Bishop Suffragan and Bishop Assistant.

Obispo Sufragáneo* de la Región Oeste 

El Obispo Sufragáneo de la Región Oeste vivirá en Austin, Texas, en la residencia del obispo en Windsor Road. 

El Obispo Sufragáneo de la Región Oeste tendrá supervisión pastoral para las congregaciones en los deanatos de Austin, y el Deanato Central, el Suroeste, y el Noroeste.

The Application includes an application form, a consent form, the OTM portfolio, a brief (200-word maximum) autobiography, and a brief (400-word maximum) statement of intent. Further materials or online interviews may be requested of applicants during the discernment period between May and October. Finalists will be invited to attend a Discernment Retreat Weekend at Camp Allen, Navasota, Texas, beginning the morning of Thursday, November 15, and ending Saturday afternoon, November 17, 2018.

Chuck has served as a priest in the Diocese of Texas for 14 years; 12 at St. Paul's in Waco and now 2 years as Rector of St. David's in Austin. He loves Austin, loves the Diocese of Texas, loves his wife Chris and loves his three children Caleb, Colton and Caroline. And he loves the University of the South where he graduated with an MDiv and a DMin. Yeah, Sewanee's Right! 
Chuck ha servido como sacerdote en la Diócesis de Texas durante 14 años; 12 en St. Paul's en Waco y ahora 2 años como Rector de St. David's en Austin. Susan has lived and served in the Diocese of Texas all her life, for many years as a layperson, and then was ordained in July of 2004. She is a graduate of The Virginia Theological Seminary and the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing.

Pam is a long-time member of Good Shepherd, Kingwood, having served in many capacities there and on various diocesan boards. She is currently president of Episcopal Senior Ministries.

David is a Regional Executive Vice President in Waco for Extraco Banks. He currently serves on the following boards: The Cove Heart of Texas Inc., Cen-Tex Certified Development Corporation, Waco Symphony Association and Baylor’s Alpha Tau Omega Alumni Board of Trustees and is actively involved as a volunteer leading the Teen Leadership Waco program sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce.

Formerly a photojournalist turned industrial real estate developer, Howard has four children and is married to Joanne Wilson of Houston. He has formerly served on the Standing Committee and the Unity in Mission project.

Gwendolyn Chance

A member of St. James’ Episcopal Church for thirty-three years, Gwen has served on the Vestry twice.  She has also been Outreach Chair for the Episcopal Church Women for the Diocese of Texas, and she is the currently the Volunteer Coordinator for the Children’s Christian Formation Program at St. James’.

Meredith has served as a priest and in a variety of capacities in the diocese of Texas for over seven years. She has traveled extensively, is passionate about preaching, mission, and reconciliation, and holds an M.Div from Virginia Theological Seminary and a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College.

A native Galvestonian and life-long Episcopalian, Susan has served as a vestry member, senior warden, school board member, Lector/Lay Reader/Lay Eucharistic Minister, and Altar Guild Directress.  She is currently a member of the Diocesan Council Management and Logistics Committees.

A Houston architect, Carvel was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1995 and has served on Vestry, as Senior Warden, and in strategic and physical master planning for St. Stephen's. Born in Colombia, Pedro moved to Chicago to study for the priesthood with the Roman Catholic Church in 1991. In 1997, he graduated from Catholic Theological Union of Chicago with a M.Div. and M.A. in Theology and was ordained a priest. Pedro joined the Episcopal Church in 2001, and he was received as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 2003. After serving as Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Elgin, IL, he moved to the Diocese of Texas in August 2011 and has served since then in Pasadena. 
Nacido en Colombia, Pedro se mudó a Chicago para estudiar para el sacerdocio con la Iglesia Católica Romana en 1991. En 1997, se graduó de la Unión Teológica Católica de Chicago con un M.Div. y M.A. en Teología y fue ordenado sacerdote. Eileen serves as the campus missioner to the University of Houston, while forming a network of community-based ministries for students from surrounding schools such as Texas Southern University, Houston Community College, and San Jacinto College.  Bilingual in English and Spanish, she has a passion for multicultural ministries. She holds an M.Div. from Virginia Theological Seminary and a B.A. from Rice University.

Kathy serves as the director of youth at St. Mark’s.  She also leads the EDOT Missionpalooza Youth Disaster Relief Mission Trip and a Primary Session at Camp Allen.
