SUMMARY:Small Church Network Gathering - Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join Bishop Fisher and members of the Diocese of Texas staff for our Spring Small Church Network Gathering at Camp Allen\, Sunday\, March 30—Monday\, March 31\, 2025.   \nRegistration will begin at 4pm on Sunday. There will social time with Bishop Fisher\, dinner\, then program starting at 7pm.  We will wrap up our time together with lunch on Monday.  Our theme this spring is:  “Formation and the Art of Seed Casting”; welcoming Canon Josh Ritter as our keynote speaker.  \nPlease register for this Small Church Network gathering at www.campallen.org/registerforevents.html\n(Scholarships Available!)  \nCheck in will begin at 4pm on Sunday. \nThere will be social time with Bishop Fisher at 5pm\, dinner\, \nthen program starting at 7pm. \nWe will wrap up our time together with lunch on Monday. \nPlease contact Kathy Dunn (kdunn@epicenter.org) if you need assistance. \nDr. Ritter describes our time together as follows:\nWe all have our own ideas about what formation is and is supposed to be in our congregations and communities. Some of us may think of Sunday School\, curriculum\, and Christian education. Some of us may think of new programs\, retreats\, small groups\, or Bible studies\, and of course\, these are all vital pieces of formational work at the level of knowing\, knowledge\, and in-formation about formation. But let us not stop here at the level of knowing or information exchange. Jesus calls us more deeply to the art of seed casting\, and as small churches\, you are uniquely positioned to hone and craft this art in powerful and transformative ways. So\, let’s explore together some of the practical habits\, skills\, and practices that are needed for the formational Christian art of seed casting. \nAs a reminder: Small Church Network Gatherings are twice a year (spring and fall)\, offered to all people in our smaller congregations\, generally average Sunday attendance of 50 or fewer. Lay folks are clergy are welcome! \nPlease forward this information on to anyone in your church. You do not want to miss this opportunity!

SUMMARY:Award winning Episcopal history that still informs and infuses today’s controversies
DESCRIPTION:Author The Rev. Roy Pollina will offer an evening discussing his book Justified by Her Children: Deeds or Courage Confronting a Tradition of Racism on Wednesday\, April 9th at 6:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church\, 4090 Delaware Street\, Beaumont\, Texas. The event is free. \nFreewill donations will be accepted for summer camp scholarships. Light refreshments and book signing will follow the presentation.\n \nThe following is a press release from the Episcopal News Service: Award winning Episcopal history that still informs and infuses today’s controversies\nThe Episcopal Church finds itself at the center of a national controversy for supporting a bishop who voiced a plea for the fearful and disadvantaged to the powerful and privileged. For her audacity the church is labeled as the enemy of law and order and accused of subverting the peace of the land. While it is not possible to label a church as godless\, it is accused of perverting the sacred traditions of religion.\nThe Episcopal Church has been there before.\nIn 1958\, Virginia newspapers were reporting that the congregational leadership of the Episcopal church in Martinsville had declared that their bishop’s plan to integrate the summer youth camp “is both illegal and ill-advised” and that they would oppose any “intermingling of the races.” Further\, the Vestry took the position that the segregation-integration question was a political-social question having no connection with religion.\n“How it was” then infuses and informs much that is happening across our country today. If you do not know this story or you question how this is possible then you need to read Justified by Her Children!\nJustified by Her Children is published in hardcover\, or paperback by MarinerMedia. Also available at Amazon\, B&N\, GooglePlay\, Apple and wherever good books are sold.\nJustified by Her Children is The Reverend Roy G. Pollina’s second book; his first book\, To Bless a Child\, was published by Church Publishing in 2009. He retired as rector from Christ Church in Martinsville\, VA\, in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia after 30 years as a priest. You can visit his Facebook page at Roy G. Pollina\, Author. \nFor more information\, contact The Rev. Jim Liberatore at frjimbo@msn.com

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Dr. David Taylor on Prayers for the Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 30\, 2025\, at 7:00 pm (CT) \, professor\, theologian\, and priest\, Dr. David Taylor will be on campus at Fuller Texas to celebrate his most recent book\, Prayers for the Pilgrimage: A Book of Collects for All of Life. \nHis book includes a wide range of prayers:\nFor “Those Who Weary of Doing Justice” and “Being Childlike in God’s Kingdom”\nFor “Juneteenth” and “A Mid-Life Crisis”\nFor “Those Who Struggle with Mental Health” and “Being Virtuous on Social Media”\nFor “Refugees” and “Janitors & Cleaners”\nFor “Birthdays” and “Going on Vacation”\nFor “Those Who Spiritually Wander” and “Grocers”\nFor “Changing a Diaper in the Middle of the Night” and “A Job Interview”\nFor “Grace Between Fellow Believers Across Political Lines” and “Pets”\nFor “Vacation Bible School” and “Waking Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed.” \nThe conversation with Dr. Taylor will be hosted by Dr. Collin Cornell\, professor of Bible and Mission. The discussion will explore ways in which an ancient form of prayer\, the “Collect\,” offers a unique opportunity to shape our individual and communal lives before God in prayer. Much like the poetry of the psalms\, this form of written prayer involves a dense mix of language and imagery that\, at best\, enables us to say exactly what needs saying to God–and perhaps also what needs saying continually to God. \n\nThe first 25 registrants will receive a free copy of the book at the event! Dr. Taylor will be available for book signings prior to the program. \nParking is free and adjacent to the Fuller Texas campus. Light refreshments will be provided.
