After an initial pilot from 2017—2019 in the Northeast Convocation, the Area Mission initiative was launched in 2020 with the Rev. Andrew Terry serving as area missioner for the Central Convocation.
Area Mission is a congregational vitality ministry of the Mission Amplification. Area Missioners serve as conduits between existing congregations (with an emphasis on congregations in more rural areas without full-time clergy) and their community. The area missioner facilitates congregations’ discernment of their unique ministry with their local area and assists them in making connections with community stakeholders as well as other congregations.
