Rachel Lazarou, Kenzi Patton, Carolyn Farris and William Broussard
In a virtual world the Calvary’s talents still shine through in reality. Four of Calvary Middle School students who were set to compete in Indianapolis at the National Thespian Convention found that they could still be prepared and come away winners in a remote and new form of competing. William Broussard carried on the Calvary tradition of a 6th grade student receiving a superior rating in solo musical theater. William performed “Just to get my name in lights” from the musical “The Boy from Oz.” Judges commented on how animated he was and his character shined through. Carolyn Farris also exceeded expectations as a 6th grader and performed “I love play rehearsal” from the musical “Be More Chill.” Carolyn worked hard during school shutdown in her virtual voice lessons with her teacher.
She sold the judges with her accuracy and storytelling through her performance. Kenzi Patton qualified her second year in a row and received a superior rating for her performance from “Be More Chill.” Kenzi stole the judges’ hearts two years in a row with her believable characterizations, voice and animated performance. Last but not least, Rachel Lazarou broke records by being the only middle school student, in Fort Bend County, (and maybe farther) to qualify three years in a row to attend nationals and receive medal honors all three years. Rachel performed “Watch What Happens” from “Newsies.” The judges’ sheets reflected that her voice was mature beyond her years, and an award winning characterization. All four students maintained their training through CEP right up until when they submitted their videos for competition. Calvary is noted for its commitment to the arts and these students have perpetuated that philosophy. Congratulations to all and Calvary is looking forward to the future accolades and awards they will receive!
