On Sunday, June 29th, St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church opened its doors and its heart to former students, teachers, administrators, and friends for a long-awaited St. Thomas’ Episcopal School Reunion. It was a day filled with joy, memories, and gratitude as we celebrated a school that touched countless lives in our community.
From 1962 to 2003, St. Thomas’ Day School (later St. Thomas’ Episcopal School) served the multi-ethnic, multiracial families of Wharton, providing an exceptional educational foundation grounded in the Christian faith. For more than forty years, children learned, grew, and formed lifelong bonds under the caring guidance of dedicated faculty and staff.

A Special Worship Service
The day began with a moving worship service led by Rev. Christopher Ellis, a proud former student who shared how deeply the school shaped his life. Music was provided by the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Choir, who lifted spirits and brought many to tears with their powerful voices.
Fellowship and Remembrance
Following the service, everyone gathered in the parish hall for a luncheon lovingly prepared by church members. Tables were adorned with photographs, yearbooks, and memorabilia from the school’s rich history, sparking stories and laughter as old friends reconnected and remembered.
Words from the Heart
Throughout the day, many shared what St. Thomas’ meant to them:
· Judy Leber, last Head of School and longtime teacher, remarked:
“Great to see a great crowd here today. There is so much love for the school family. The kids were blessed to attend the school.”
· Sue Weller, long-serving Head of School, said:
“This was a magical school, so uplifting, with so much support. The people were wonderful.”
· Chris Ellis, previous student and now a priest, shared:
“The school meant everything to me. I’m still a St. Thomas Eagle to the core.”
· Stephen Nelson, also a former student, reflected:
“Dr. Copeland sponsored me to attend the school. Attending meant everything to me.”
A Lasting Legacy
This reunion was more than a walk down memory lane—it was a testament to the enduring legacy of St. Thomas’ Episcopal School and the profound impact it had on generations of families. As we honored the past, we were reminded of the power of a Christ-centered community to shape lives and build lasting bonds.
