Counting Online Attendance

As we continue offering worship online, how we measure our worship attendance is different. The Mission Amplification Team recognizes that recording this information is not the same as taking attendance on Sunday mornings. Congregations in the Diocese of Texas are using a variety of platforms. Instructions for gathering viewer metrics can be found through the following links:

  • The number of those viewing worship online during the hour of liturgy on Sunday for at least one minute during the service time
  • The number of those that viewed worship online for at least one minute following the time Sunday service ends up until the start of worship on the following week
  • The number of those that attended worship in person when applicable

To record your total views on a platform would be simple, but not an accurate picture of participation on Sundays. To record a more accurate estimate of worship participation, we are asking that you perform a calculation once you have located viewer count for your services on the platform(s). Look for the following numbers:

____  # of LIVE VIEWERS ONLINE (for at least 1 minute during Sunday worship)

+ ____  # of DELAYED VIEWERS ONLINE (after worship until the following Sunday)

1.5      FOR HOUSEHOLDS VIEWING TOGETHER
= ____  TOTAL ONLINE VIEWERSHIP ON A GIVEN WEEK

Spelled out, this means that you would take those viewing worship online during the hour of liturgy on Sunday for at least one minute during the service time. Add this to those that viewed worship online for at least one minute from the time the service ends up until the service starts the following week. This is then multiplied by 1.5 to reflect the households that view worship online together. This sum is your total online attendance on a given week.
