Last week, our own Houston Canterbury students were among Episcopalians who represented the Diocese of Texas at the annual Human Rights Campaign gala in Houston. The evening celebrated advocates advancing equality for all people, while encouraging attendees to not give up in the face of increased marginalization of vulnerable communities, especially LGBTQ+ youth. Molly Carnes, member of St. Mary’s and an active equality advocate, reached out to Houston Canterbury, to inviting students to attend because “they are the future of this state, many feel attacked right now, and need to know their faith community supports them.” Keynote speakers included Congressperson Lizzie Fletcher, author and activist Karen Walrond, and actress Cassandra James. The Human Rights Campaign envisions a world strengthened by diversity, where laws and society treat all people equally.
