Episcopal Health Foundation is on a mission to create healthier communities throughout the Diocese of Texas after hosting their second 2019 In Common gatherings at Christ Church, Tyler June 7-8, 2019.
More than 30 attendees representing 11 congregations and Episcopal entities from East Texas and Houston came together to engage in conversation in the focus areas of poverty, race, mental health and organizing communities.
The Rt. Rev. Jeff W. Fisher, bishop suffragan of the eastern region of the diocese, was elated to be part of this event as he dedicates much of his work engaging with communities and is also passionate about reconciliation.
“In addition to people being engaged and enthusiastic, they enjoyed visiting with other congregations who are engaged in the same type of work,” Fisher said.
In Common Tyler offered participants a community engagement workshop directed by EHF staff and a racial reconciliation workshop presented by ProjectCURATE. The Rev. Matthew Russell, Ph.D., and Cleve Tinsley from ProjectCURATE were the keynote speakers.
“EHF serves as a thought partner so community-based ministries can move to more transformational, relational approaches with stronger, lasting impact,” said Eric Moen, congregational engagement officer for Episcopal Health Foundation.
In Common began as a place for Episcopal congregations and their community partners to form stronger bonds and lasting relationships as participants have the chance to share their stories and be inspired by others. They also gain new skills and learn about the resources and approaches to help better identify their communities’ needs.
With a successful pilot event in 2018, with over 100 people gathering in Houston, this year EHF has scheduled several events across the diocese this year. The first one took place at Good Shepherd, Austin in March.
In addition, EHF will also host a free Health Summit on Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at St. Mark’s, Bellaire for clergy, lay leaders and community partners. More information can be found here.
