St. Vincent’s House Set to Celebrate MLK Day Jan. 21

St. Vincent’s House will host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity Prayer Circle from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, in the SVH courtyard at 2817 Alfreda Houston Place (Postoffice Street) in Galveston. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors, downstairs at SVH.

This event is ecumenical and inclusive in its scope and purpose by bringing together members of various faith traditions, races and nationalities for the purpose of offering prayers for the peace, strength and unity of Galveston, while gathering to honor the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year’s theme is “Strengthening Our Community”. The service will be led by representatives of various faith denominations on the island and will include a time for open prayer as participants join hands in the Annual Unity Prayer Circle. Light refreshments will be provided and served by the Ivy Isles Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Dr. King’s once said, “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” The Unity Prayer Circle on January 21stinvites all to gather and get to know one another in ways that will call Galvestonians to live, work and serve together.

The St. Vincent’s House mission is to provide services and resources to empower people, especially the poor and working poor, to become self-sustaining and contributing members of our community. SVH is guided to accomplish that mission by following the gospel of Jesus Christ which calls us to be agents of hope and transformation in the lives of individuals and families. As the memory of Dr. King is honored, St. Vincent’s believes its work does, indeed, strengthen the community one person, one family at a time.

SVH considers it an honor and privilege to partner with others on Galveston Island and in Galveston County who believe that, regardless of differences, Galvestonians share enough commonalities for unity and peace to prevail.
