On Sunday, July 6, the Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu (Associate Priest at All Saints Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA), third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, served as guest priest at Emmanuel, Houston.
Born in South Africa and having lived in many places, she was educated in Swaziland, the US, and England, and has split her adult life between South Africa and the United States.
After years spent as a development consultant, educator, and race and gender activist, she accepted her call to ordained ministry.
Her professional experience ranges from being a development consultant in West Africa, to being program coordinator for programs on Race and Gender and Gender-based Violence in Education at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. Additionally, the Rev. Tutu has taught at the University of Hartford, University of Connecticut, and Brevard College in North Carolina. She served as the Program Coordinator for the historic Race Relations Institute at Fisk University and was part of the Institute’s delegation to the World Conference Against Racism in Durban.
During her sermon, Rev. Tutu delivered a powerful and heartfelt message to the community, reminding us not to focus on judging others, but rather to look inward:
โWorry about your actions. Worry about how you treat people. Donโt get caught up in the messages of the world or judging others. Worry about how you show Godโs kingdom to others.โ
We give thanks to God for having her share her ministry with Emmanuel, Houston. To learn more about the Rev. Tutu, please visit here.
