United in Faith: St. Martin’s Houston Welcomes Anglican Communion Secretary General for Pentecost Sunday Sermon.

Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2025, became a moment of profound global connection and local celebration as the Rt. Rev. Anthony Poggo, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, visited St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. The visit marked the beginning of a series of church and community engagements across the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, hosted by the Rt. Rev. Andy Doyle.

During his time at St. Martin’s, Bishop Anthony preached at two morning services, delivering a Pentecost message centered on unity, mission, and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. “We should be filled with the Spirit not just on Pentecost, but daily, as we build the Church of God,” he told the congregation.

He also joined the Rev. Wesley Arning for a special Adult Forum, where he shared insights about the work of the Anglican Communion Office—supporting church growth, fostering global dialogue, and preparing for upcoming events such as the 2026 Anglican Consultative Council in Ireland.

“The global Church is alive and moving,” Bishop Anthony shared. “In my role as Secretary General, I am privileged to witness the strength and creativity of Anglicans around the world, empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out the Gospel with courage and compassion.”

Throughout his visit, Bishop Poggo emphasized the importance of connection. He encouraged the people of St. Martin’s—and, by extension, the Diocese of Texas—to remain mindful of their place in the wider Anglican family: “When we stay connected, we grow together. We learn from one another. We deepen our call to serve.”

The visit was warmly received by the clergy and parishioners of St. Martin’s. Founded in 1952, St. Martin’s is now the largest Episcopal Church in North America, known for its commitment to both tradition and innovation in worship.
