San Romero in Houston Feeds More Than 400 People Each Week

In the heart of Houston, Iglesia Episcopal San Romero has transformed faith into action. Through its Feed My People ministry, the church nourishes more than 400 individuals every week. What began as a dream and a step of faith has become a beacon of solidarity, especially for the Hispanic community seeking support and welcome in the city.

“My lifelong calling has been to serve migrants and refugees. I believe that before we can tend to the spiritual, we must first meet the essential need: feeding people,” shares the Rev. Uriel, founder of San Romero.

A Mission from God, A Service to the Community

Since August 2024, San Romero has been an official partner of the Houston Food Bank. In just four months, the congregation distributed 149,874 pounds of food—the equivalent of 124,895 meals valued at $260,781. Despite being a new partner, San Romero was recognized among the Food Bank’s “medium” distribution sites for its significant impact.

Each month, the church hosts four food distributions. Two on Saturday mornings and two on Tuesday evenings. Food is offered freely, with no requirements. “People register and receive. We want families to feel welcome,” Rev. Uriel explains.

The impact reaches far beyond food. More than 40% of the congregation actively serve in the pantry, turning each distribution into a time of joy and fellowship. “It is God’s mandate. Feed My People is our way of responding to His call and sharing the abundance of the Lord,” adds Rev. Uriel.

From the very beginning, Ana Cecilia Celaya, from El Salvador, and Lupita Alas have worked alongside Rev. Uriel to launch and sustain Feed My People. Together with many others, they serve their neighbors with compassion: “If you want to give to Him, you must serve your neighbor,” they affirm.

Sofía and Daniela, friends and volunteers, also bring joy to families in need, offering food and serving generously with kindness and care.

With members from across Latin America, San Romero has created a community where faith is lived through service and dignity. Every truckload from the Food Bank is distributed the very same day. “We don’t have storage—everything goes out. Within an hour to an hour and a half, it’s all gone,” says Rev. Uriel.

In this way, the people of San Romero continue to bear witness that the love of God multiplies when shared with generosity and hope.
