Fr. James Mwangi has been detained by ICE for some time. After prayerful consultation with his family, colleagues, and legal advisors, he has discerned that the best course of action is to voluntarily return to Kenya. He has been assured that this approach will allow him to maintain a “clear” record with DHS and may enable him to reapply to return to the United States in the future, should he choose to do so.
Rev. Blake Rider, rector of St. Stephen’s in Huntsville, created this GoFundMe account in response to the many inquiries asking how the community might help. All funds raised will support Fr. James as he re-establishes his life in Kenya.
The community remains heartbroken by the trauma experienced by Fr. James and his family. He is aware of the many calls, emails, and prayers offered on his behalf, and remains deeply grateful for the outpouring of love.
The Episcopal Diocese of Texas and the Hispanic Ministry also note that the Migration with Dignity Emergency Fund provides immediate assistance to immigrant families facing detention, loss of income, or safety concerns. The fund is open to support Fr. James Eliud Mwangi and his family during this difficult transition.
