A decade-long tradition will continue thanks to the efforts of the Rev. Bob Wismer at St. Francis Episcopal Church. Wismer began the tradition of Blessing of the Backpacks at St. Francis, 345 Piney Point Road, about 10 years ago. Now families include this spiritual event in their back-to-school routine.

An annual Episcopal Diocese of Texas youth mission trip, Missionpalooza continued focusing on disaster relief in 2019, serving a second year on Hurricane Harvey recovery work. This year, nearly 100 youth and adults volunteered to support this effort. Churches represented were Christ Church Cathedral, Houston; Good Shepherd, Tomball; Holy Comforter, Angleton; Palmer Memorial, Houston; St. Catherine of Sienna, Missouri City; St. Mark’s, Bay City; St. Michael’s, Austin; St. Matthew’s, Austin; St. Stephen’s, Liberty; Trinity, Baytown; and Trinity, Houston.

The Rev. Canon Joseph M.C. Chambers, canon to the ordinary of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri has been named the new Chief of Staff for the Diocese of Texas, the Bishop announced July 8. In his new position, Chambers will support Bishop Andy Doyle’s work, amplifying the vision of the Diocese of Texas, supervising the Bishop’s office team and overseeing a variety of projects, initiatives and events that support the Bishop’s work.
Someone asked me this question a few years ago as I mused out loud about serving a term as spiritual director for a Diocesan program known as “Happening,” a youth-lead movement that meets four weekends a year at Camp Allen in Navasota.
Among the crowds at this year’s Pride Houston Festival, a man read our “God Thinks You’re Fabulous” shirts as he was walking past, pointed our direction, and said “You guys are true Christians.” His words affirmed to me that what we do matters and that there need to be more Christians showing open support for this community.
