Founded in 1873, when the Rt. Rev. Alexander Gregg, first Bishop of Texas, licensed Dr. Thomas S. Denny as a lay reader, St. Mary’s officially became a mission of the Diocese of Texas in 1875. The annual Blessing of the Pets was a joyful success! Our beloved animals filled churches across the diocese, bringing smiles, laughter, and gratitude for God’s creation. Many of our church’s congregations were even featured in the news! “Gift of God’s Creation”: St. Cyprian’s, Lufkin Featured in the News St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in Lufkin was highlighted for its much-loved annual Blessing of the Animals. Each year, parishioners and visitors gather on the church grounds to celebrate God’s creation, receiving blessings for their cherished pets from the clergy. Apollo is built on the Respite for All (RFA) model, a thoughtfully created program that began in 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
